Physical testing for energy systems
Lavoit develops and tests electrolyser and battery systems to improve the accuracy of our energy optimisation software. By collecting operational data from physical equipment, we can develop, evaluate and refine our models under realistic conditions.
From simulation to physical testing
Accurate energy optimisation requires a detailed understanding of how equipment behaves during operation.
We develop pilot systems for electrolysers and battery energy storage to study their performance, test control strategies and collect data for model validation.
These experiments help us improve our optimisation algorithms, understand equipment limitations and prepare our software for integration with commercial energy systems.
Two areas of testing
Our research focuses on electrolysers and battery energy storage systems. Each has its own experimental setup, measurement requirements and optimisation objectives.
Electrolyser testing
We investigate the electrical, thermal and operational characteristics of alkaline electrolysers.
Our experiments focus on efficiency, hydrogen production, dynamic operating conditions and equipment degradation. Measurements are used to develop and validate models for production scheduling, plant operation and lifetime optimisation.
Battery testing
We test battery charging and discharging strategies, energy efficiency and integration with electrical systems.
The experiments provide data for evaluating electricity price arbitrage, balancing-market participation and the effects of different operating strategies on battery lifetime.
Test facilities in development
We are developing dedicated test facilities for both electrolyser and battery systems. Engineering, assembly and commissioning are ongoing, with additional instrumentation and testing capabilities planned as development progresses.
The facilities will support controlled experiments, data collection and integration testing with our optimisation software.

What we measure
Our test systems are designed to collect data across several areas of equipment performance:
- Electrical performance: Voltage, current and power consumption at different operating points
- Thermal behaviour: Temperature changes, heat generation and cooling performance
- System efficiency: Hydrogen production, energy conversion and battery round-trip efficiency
- Equipment degradation: Changes in performance and efficiency over operating time
- Model validation: Comparison of predicted behaviour with experimental measurements
- Control integration: Communication, measurement and response to operating commands
From measurements to better models
Experimental data is used to calibrate our models, evaluate optimisation strategies and improve the accuracy of software recommendations.
As our test facilities become operational, we will publish technical findings and verified performance results. Design specifications and development targets will be identified separately from measured performance.
